In Buddhism, renunciation is a very important part of practice to reduce the burden of suffering in this life and to attain Buddhahood for the sake of all others. I would like to situate this concept within the culture of our modern lives, because due to a lack of understanding, today many people tend to take its meaning literally which can come across as less caring and even cruel. According to the Buddhist point of view, renunciation does not mean giving up one's responsibilities and running away from one's family. In fact, it involves being more engaged, but wisely engaged, without self-centeredness or selfishness. Renunciation involves not having attachment to our belongings, our family, or wealth, and also not having anger towards our opponents. In summary, renunciation involves having fewer priorities and maintaining the same respect and love toward all without attachment or hatred. Therefore, in order to become a good practitioner, we can be still be lay persons and pursue the path of enlightenment.
